NXT Level Training Tip #1: Speak the Same Language
Beefing up language skills helps us better communicate clear information and concepts with others. We all do this daily in our personal and business interactions and it’s no different in the lighting world.
In NXT Level’s Course 1: Lighting Concepts, participants learn the importance of using common professional terminology when talking about lighting. Here is a snapshot of four key terms that are discussed:
- Spectral Power Distribution (SPD)—A graphic representation of the radiant power emitted by a light source at each wavelength or band of wavelengths in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum (360 to 770 nanometers). Lamp manufacturers publish SPD curves of specific light sources.
- Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)—The correlated color temperature (CCT) is a specification of the color appearance of the light emitted by a lamp, relating its color to the color of light from a reference source when heated to a particular temperature, measured in degrees Kelvin (K).
- Color Rendering Index (CRI)—A measure of a light source’s ability to show object colors realistically or naturally compared to a familiar reference source, either incandescent light or daylight.
- Gamut Area Index (GAI)—A measure of color rendering based on volume in color space. It is the range of colors achievable on a given color reproduction medium, or present in an image on that medium, under a given set of viewing conditions.
